How to ensure high-quality and safe remote work: important steps
The outbreak of coronavirus forced the business to quickly switch to a new format of work. This was a real challenge for Ukrainian companies. But those who began their journey of digital transformation long before quarantine were able to switch to remote work much easier.
Sergiy DETYUK, Chief Executive Officer at Metinvest Digital, shared his experience of successful transition to remote work with Channel 24.
According to him, their company, like many others in the world, did not expect that it would face a situation where in a very short time it would be necessary to transfer many employees to remote work.
‘It was a stress test, which, in my opinion, we successfully passed: now more than 10 000 employees of the Metinvest group work remotely’, said Detyuk.
He named several important components that allowed the corporation to adapt to new working conditions almost painlessly.
Covid-19 was a kind of test for the IT strategy for compliance with modern requirements and the ability to withstand the so-called VUCA-world. Obviously, the strategy is systemic steps and investments in the development of the company's integrated IT infrastructure.
Those companies that approached IT development strategically were able to quickly and almost painlessly adapt to new realities. How IT departments overcame the crisis is an assessment of previous actions and steps that have been taken in the past.
Flexibility and adaptability
The cloudy future is here. The quarantine also confirmed the correctness of the migration of corporate infrastructure to the cloud and, in general, the more active use of cloud technologies.
Flexibility and adaptability are synonyms of modern IT infrastructure. Thanks to the transition to the Microsoft Azure platform, which began last year, we were well-prepared. Cloud technologies provide IT with greater flexibility, enable it to respond much faster to crises and challenges, and most importantly, scale infrastructure without significant capital investments.
Another important component is to ensure uninterrupted, safe and convenient work of employees at home. Remote operation requires corporate tools to be convenient and accessible on various platforms and devices. For example, we get the most out of Office 365 tools: secure information sharing, collaborative project work, online meetings, video conferencing, etc.
Remote work is certainly a challenge for a cybersecurity company. Now every person, his computer, or other device should also be considered in the concept of information security. This is the so-called “Zero Trust Tolerance” cybersecurity model, which I was lucky to be a member of at the Microsoft Global CIO Summit at the end of that year. She says that at the current level of technology development, a cyber threat can come from anywhere and there will never be a guarantee of 100% information security for business.
And finally, the most important thing. People. It doesn’t matter how much investment you make in IT if it does not have value for your employees and does not take into account the needs of the business. Systems and technologies alone do not solve business problems. Only when your employees begin to actively use new tools, IT services and systems, the whole company will benefit as well.
Digital transformation is primarily about changing the culture within, and only then about new technologies. Successful experience in remote work has inspired us to further improve in this direction. We have already accelerated a pilot project within the company to switch to a permanent format of remote work for most functions.
