Gartner: how the role of cloud services will change in 2021

The pandemic is stimulating the transition to cloud services. According to Gartner, the global cost of users in public clouds in 2021 will reach $ 304.9 billion, showing an increase of 18.4% over the year.

Cloud services proved their effectiveness during the pandemic, when companies quickly switched their activities to remote mode. The lessons learned influenced the formation of the IT strategy for 2021, according to a study by Gartner. Despite a small reduction in total IT costs, companies will continue to invest in cloud services.

Clouds will become even more popular

As a result of the pandemic, the controversy over whether the public cloud is an operating model for business has stopped, Gartner said. Therefore, analysts predict that the use of clouds will expand. In 2024, cloud services will account for 14.2% of global corporate IT spending. For comparison: now this figure is only 9.1%.

According to Gartner analysts, the biggest growth in 2021 will fall on IaaS (infrastructure as a service) - 26.6%. At the same time, SaaS (software as a service) with a cost of $ 117.7 billion will remain the largest segment of the cloud services market.

The previous restraint of companies in choosing cloud services was due to unfounded fears. Public clouds have proven their ability to protect confidential information.

Despite the reliability of clouds, Gartner calls the cultural features of the organization a restraining factor in their development. For example, when some institutions treat data as their own property, they see it necessary to keep the data under their own control.

Forecast for the future

PaaS services will become more and more popular, as the boundaries between different cloud services will continue to blur, companies will be more likely to offer their products in packages.

Many tasks that migrate to the cloud are rewritten and become native-cloud. Whereas before, they were transferred unchanged. Today, companies use containers such as containers, artificial intelligence and machine learning as elements of DevOps, creating continuous software integration / delivery (CI / CD) pipelines.

Even if the vaccine is effective and the cloud pandemic ends, it will further strengthen and transform IT. Many employees in different companies want to be able to continue working remotely, because companies are convinced that this is possible. This will stimulate the further development of appropriate services designed to ensure reliable, stable and uninterrupted operation remotely.

Attempts to work exclusively on their own sites are a thing of the past. The idea of creating large-scale own data centers is beginning to recede. The world will no longer be the same.
